Maxim’s “unsexiest Women Alive” List: Tacky Or Funny?
in case you missed it, they said the following about Sarah Jessica Parker, who placed first on the list.
“How the hell did this Barbaro-faced broad manage to be the least sexy woman in a group of very unsexy women and still star on a show with ’sex’ in the title? Pull your skirt down, Secretariat, we´d rather ride Chris Noth.”
i will keep my opinion to myself, but what does it say about our society that a mainstream mag would publish such a hurtful list? would it have been better if they had focused on PERSONALITY rather than physical appearnace?

I’m a man, and I freely admit that I find “Unsexiest Women Alive” to be a pretty tacky idea. Hadn’t heard of that list before, but I feel pretty disgusted at the idea of compiling such a list…it does seem pretty hurtful and condescending. The snarky side comments you mention are definitely not helping.
As far as “Sexiest Women Alive”, I don’t see anything wrong with that, since that is meant to be a compliment, and being sexy is a large part of what makes celebrities watchable (and bankable).
I must disagree with your idea of a personality ranking though…celebrity is a public image, manipulated by agents and PR people, and so personality doesn’t really enter into that. What we see isn’t quite the real person; each person in the public eye rightly tries to keep public persona and private life separate.
it’s funny.
Unbelieveably TACKY.
Yes they seem to be quite witty in their put downs but I think when you remember that this is an actual person it’s too cruel.
I do agree that celebritys are open to ridicule and exist for the entertainment of the masses and I can happily laugh about what they wear, how talented/talentless they are or how stupidly they behave personal attacks like the above are uncalled for in a mainstream magazine.
Then again my friends and I have said she’s kind of horsey so is that any different? Plus we do have freedom of the press so everything I’ve written is moot.
Gosh – after all that – I still say it’s tacky.
Really…does any of it matter? They say that any publicity is good publicity…and that has proven exceptionally true in cases like Brittney Spears. Even with a lousy latest album, she still manages to be the most photographed and written-about celeb over the last couple of years.
Mr. Blackwell has been nasty for many years now, publishing his best and worst dressed for all the world to see. And what about the celebrity versions of ‘Do’s and Don’ts articles in the back of one of the fashion magazines….they are happily parading out bad taste!
Is is tacky to publish a list like that? Maybe. But no more tacky than the behaviour of many of pseudo-celebs today. And really, if they didn’t want to be written about, they should have taken on a far less obvious career. The papparazzi has been around for decades…and these people all knew what they were getting into. If they don’t like it, quit the business and move to a quieter location.
Might not be the most tasteful article, but it’s not lacking truth.
Funny. If most women are hairy, rabbid wenches who can t take a joke, whatever, I don t care.
They’re celebrities. They’re on display for human entertainment. *shrug*
It’s sad for SKP & her family to have to go through this. Also, for little girls who might look like her & see that being a hard working person can get you somewhere cause she is a hard worker…On the other hand I always look for a gift in everything I she has come at & made a statement & others can make statement that will bring this out in the open & show how wise & beautiful women are who look like her or who don’t look like a cookie cutter “sexist women” alive.
LIke Maxiam you must pose naked to get any attention. And SJP has some dignity and refuses to pose nude on everything, SO MORE POWER TO HER. I hate all mags that make it like if a woman is not a size 0 and pose’s nude you are ugly! So more or less I hate mags!
What possible useful purpose can be served by compiling such a list? It is cruel, mean spirited, and stupid.
Certainly it could have been better if it focused on personality instead of physical appearance. I mean, the smae sort of acid tongued barbs thrown at PAris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie for bing racist, self absorbed, pampered little twits could have been plenty funny.
When a list like this, or even a sexiest list is created, it serves to perpetuate the idea that women should be evaluated based on physical appearance in a way that men rarely are. This has effects in the way that women are perceived in the business world and throughout society in general. That said, I think its equally dumb when people magazine or whoever puts out a Sexiest Men alive list, which they do every year. In general, our society’s obsession with the physical is not very becoming at all
Its inaccurate, in bad taste, and an example of media inventing trash.
Of course it’s mean. But that’s the point.
Everything is about pushing the envelope.
Shock shock shock.
A boyfriend once compared me to her.
tacky. and mean-spirited.
Of course it’s tacky.
But it’s funny because it’s written by men have no life outside of sexual attraction.
I think it is tacky. Being that they ONLY feature young hot girls I think it is in bad taste. I am sure that most of the ’sexy’ ones will eventually be on the unsexy list in time.
I have no idea what kind of a crowd Maxim magazine caters to, but I would venture to say it is a very young one. What people in their teens and 20ies consider “SEXY” is pretty much revolting to me personally. I am referring to Paris Hilton type of a chemically over-processed, artificial in every possible way, mentally vacant jailbirds with absence of any direction in life except an insatiable hunger for undeserving public attention. I am absolutely sure that medical professionals of the near future will have their hands full with all the irrevocable damage the lifestyle of Hilton and Britney worshipers are leading these days.
Now, considering the sources, I personally would not pay any attention to their meager opinions on anything. They simply are not important enough to me. Sarah Jessica Parker is one of the greatest actresses of her generation. She also has a massive body of work in television, movies and Broadway theater, supported by an incomparable by its size and dedication fan base to prove it. She has a large number of awards to show the world, that she does not really care one way or another for what Maxim or any other trash rag thinks of what she looks like. That is why these publications are simply irrelevant in their sensationalistic opinions, because no one of consequence cares to read them.
Like everything else Maxim has ever produced, tacky. Lists of the most attractive women are sexist enough.
Mike T, the reason Sarah Jessica Parker is on a TV show is because she CAN act. I would much rather see a less attractive woman who can act than some silicon inflated starlet who only seems to be reading her lines from a cue card. She got to where she is not from her looks but from talent and hard work. I find that much more admirable than someone who thinks that getting gobs of plastic surgery will somehow give her talent and make her a huge star. Those women are a dime-a-dozen. Go watch “Girls Gone Wild” and see stupid young women who actually believe that getting drunk and acting like idiots will somehow get them into a major singing and acting career. It hasn’t worked for Ashley Alexander Dupree, now has it?
Maxim is gonna so get sued.
Sarah Jessica Parker doesn’t look like a horse…..
Well – consider the stupid source – Maxim. It’s not like there is a high-intelligence factor going into the making of this magazine.
It is tacky and mean, but we are talking about the male equivalent to Cosmo, which is an asinine women’s magazine.
Given that it’s Maxim, which is pretty lowbrow, I find it funny. However, I would not find it so funny were I Sarah Jessica Parker. Someone should do a list for men, that would be funny too. My entry: Zac Efron.
Edit: Oh, hell yes, he’s about as sexy as a herpes outbreak…
I’ve never even heard of a mag called , “Maxim” but that is pretty damned insensitive/cruel. Celebrities may get calloused to notoriety but no one ever gets immune to insulting cruelty. personally I’ve always thought that she may not have a natural beauty (like Princess Grace Kelly) that she has a charismatic magnetism. But regardless one might be tempted to berate things that person can change about themselves (dress/ fashion etc) one should never berate things that are nature (appearance) and are beyond our control.
I think it’s funny. She really doesn’t look that good. How did she get to star in that show? Did they even try to find good looking women? The only good looking one was that brunette. It’s a men’s magazine, nobody wants to read about personality contests. Doesn’t matter, the magazine is pretty big, so I think America is speaking for itself. It’s funny.
It’s funny. If she didn’t want to be criticized then she shouldn’t have become famous.
As a woman, I find it funny. I don’t understand why the women in this section get so upset about it.
The truth ain’t pretty. The reality is that women will NEVER BE JUDGED BY THEIR PERSONALITY ALONE and thats just how it is.
Men are judged just as unfairly as women.. only its different criteria thats under fire.
Sarah Jessica Parker looks like a hawk and should be on a Fruit Loops box.. not on a TV show. But thats just my opinion.
Women want to be judged by their personalities? TOUGH!!! Ain’t gonna happen.. NEVER.
